Derek started cycling competitively at age 9, picking up track cycling at age 13. His father was a road cyclist and they had an ongoing competition to see who would win a national title first; in 2014 his dad became national road race champion in the 50+ age category but since then Derek has won 14 national titles on the road and the track.

In 2023, he made his World Tour debut at the Giro d’Italia, where he susprised both himself and the world with four second-place stage finishes, as well as second-place standings in both the KOM and Sprint classifications.

Building on his success at the Giro, Derek has continued to excel in 2024. He won his first World Tour title on stage three of the Critérium du Dauphiné and managed to clinch the yellow jersey at the same time. He finished third overall.

At his Tour de France debut, Derek put on an absolutely fierce performance. On stage nine, he rode most of the race in a breakaway group and finished a close third in a sprint finish. That move him up to top-ten in the GC for almost the rest of the Tour, earning him a ninth place finish overall – the third highest ranking of any Canadian rider.
